Various definitions of "Black Bag " exist. Within the Intelligence and Security Community, they can include such diverse areas as:
- Courier
- The depositing or extraction of people by covert or deceptive means
- The insertion of special electronic and/or visual equipment for some form of monitoring into any controlled or limited access area in which the special agent's would normally be denied access
- The entering and subsequent exiting of a person(s) into a denied area for the purpose of examining a portion or all of the area the planting of hidden electronic (usually microphones), reording or relay equipment document examination, or other equipment for use at a later time or for the specific purpose of removal of certain documents or pieces of hardware.

Essentially, Black Bag is the term applied to any form of covert or surreptitious entry made into any area (building, apartment, house, business concern, foreign entry) for the purpose of planting, inspecting, or removing something of value to the person (or his employer) performing the black bag job. In one form or another, almost all of the above definition areas are included in this generalized definition which is all-encompassing and intended to set out the parameters of this book.
