The P-08 Parabellum Luger Automatic Pistol
Historical Background
Luger - the very word conjures up visions of a stalemate in the trenches in 1917, or a guerrilla action with captured weapons by French Resistance fighters in Fortress Europe, or a silenced "hit " in the alleys of Istanbul, Port Said or Budapest as Communism and democracy locked horns in the Cold War which followed the fall of the Third Reich. The Luger has a mystique unequalled by that of any other handgun, even the legendary Colt Single Action Army or the Broomhandle Mauser. Some shooters almost become glassy eyed at the mere mention of the Luger, their reactions and emotions reaching an even higher pitch when they get to touch one. And if they actually get to fire it-WOW!
Like many legends, all the legendary things that are accredited to the Luger are really just "the best part of the truth ", with the gun's failings passed over or swept into the bottom of the wooden shoulder stock holster. Our desire here is to neither increase the legend nor defame this famous weapon, but to present a brief, objective history of the gun and its service record.
